TED WARREN
I would like to introduce you to an amazing man I came across when my daughter joined the Durham Youth Orchestra. While setting up for the first concert I saw him running around getting things ready. I thought maybe he had a grandchild in the orchestra. It fascinated me when I found out he didn't. It's hard enough to get parents to volunteer when their children are involved but someone with no attachment??? Here is a very brief outline of what he does with his time these days.
DURHAM YOUTH ORCHESTRA - He's been on the Board of Directors with the orchestra for nine years. He helps with the setting up and taking down of the stage for concerts, ticket sales, stuffs programmes with flyers, and any other errands that need to be done. Most importantly you will always find him greeting people at the door with his infectious smile when they arrive. His granddaughter is often present taking photos of the orchestra for advertising.
KIWANIS - He has also sat on the Board of Directors for Kiwanis for ten years. He manages the senior and advanced piano competition at the festival. He helps with fundraising including finding corporate sponsorship. He has organized events like "Night of The Stars" where he invites the winners of the Kiwanis competition to perform at an event to raise money.
ONTARIO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - You will also find him at the Ontario Philharmonic Orchestra concerts. He has either stuffed the programmes with flyers, or picked up special guest performers at the airport or rail station. He and his wife have provided refreshments for the rehearsals.
CHRIST MEMORIAL CHURCH - He has been very involved with his home church for 41 years. Ted has been a part of the choir the whole time he has attended there. He used to help out with maintenance around the church, scouts programs, youth camping trips etc... Now he helps organize a fundraising event to raise money to support the milk program at a local school. Of course the fundraiser always involves the young talented musicians performing, plus a silent auction.
DURHAM PHILHARMONIC CHOIR - He was a part of this choir for ten years.
CULTURE COUNTS - He has been recently attending meetings in the City of Oshawa about developing the Arts and Culture in our area.
MEALS ON WHEELS - I guess he had a few extra minutes on his hands so he decided to deliver meals on wheels to those in need.
You could say he is pretty much a full time volunteer. If you're wondering what this 77 year old does for fun well that's the really fascinating part to me. He and his wife go for rides on their motorcycles, yes motorcycles!!! Recently Ted has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and has received several radiation treatments for it. Even this hasn't slowed him down. He continues to give his time unselfishly. I admire how he lives life to the fullest. It's been a privilege getting to know him over the past six years and I hope one day when I'm retired that I will be a blessing to others like he is. But one thing is for certain, I will NOT be riding a motorcycle.

Is this you? If you were nominated by someone else and do not wish to take part in this contest, opt out here.
