Where do I start? Marie has been a volunteer in our hospital for many, many years. She is a tireless, thoughtful, caring volunteer.

When I first starting working as the Manager of Volunteer Resources in 1993, Marie was the Volunteer Coordinator for the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society. She put in countless hours of her time, over and above the role, ensuring that patients at the end of their life had trained volunteers that could support them in that journey. She was the cornerstone of the society, setting the standards which continue to this day.

During this time Marie was also trained as a spiritual care volunteer, supporting patient visits in the hospital. No matter what time of the day or night, if you asked Marie to come in and visit a patient, she was there. Always smiling, always caring...a real benefit to the program.

She also volunteers with the St. Luke's Catholic Parish in Maple Ridge. Using her skills as a trained spiritual care volunteer, she visits members of the congregation as requested. Because the Priest of the Parish does not drive, Marie has been bringing him to the hospital every week for many years to ensure that patients receive the support that they request.

About 3 years ago, Marie had a fall while visiting a patient in our hospital. She broke her hip. When I visited Marie in Emergency that day, all she was worried about was how the patients would receive the visits that they requested. Not one thought whatsoever about her own well-being. It wasn't long before Marie was on her feet and asking if she could volunteer using a walker or a cane.

Marie continues to surprise me each and everyday. As I said above, she is a tireless, giving, caring, compassionate volunteer. She has other health issues but she is never down. She never complains. She isn't afraid to speak her mind and advocate for the patients in her role as a volunteer.

We are very, very fortunate to have a volunteer like Marie. And it is our hope that we can continue to support her to volunteer as much as she would like.
