Fran Graff deserves to win the Salute to Senior ServiceĀ® Contest because she's a tireless dynamo who generously shares her time and her love, to change the lives of seniors through volunteer service. And she's been doing that for almost 40 years!

It was in 1975 when Fran answered an ad seeking volunteers from our fledgling, non-profit organization. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, North York Seniors Centre (NYSC) provides programs and services for seniors. Fran decided it was the right organization for her because she enjoys helping people. We were so fortunate to have Fran join our effort making a difference in the lives of seniors. And make a difference she did. Plus, Fran's never missed a single day's work in all that time. I'm sure you'll agree that's astounding.

Fran is an exceptional example of the power of the human spirit to triumph over tragedy. In 2001, Fran was struck by a car causing a number of injuries including a broken ankle. The only thing that upset Fran about the accident was missing the annual NYSC walkathon. Fran had participated in this fundraising event for 22 years. But through her hard work, dedication and commitment to NYSC and the people we serve, Fran pushed through painful physiotherapy and successfully completed the walkathon the following year. Her cheerful dedication was an inspiration to others and they lined up to sponsor her participation.

Whether Fran works at reception, in the membership office or helps at fundraising events, her cheery, positive attitude brightens the day for everyone she meets. She greets all our clients, members, volunteers, staff and stakeholders with a warm, welcoming smile. Fran makes everyone feel they have a friend. One of Fran's responsibilities is making our alert calls about extreme weather conditions to our seniors who are at risk and isolated in the community. Fran ensures they're safe in their homes.

We always remind Fran how much we appreciate her 39 years of service and her contribution of time, skills and talents to help people who really need it. But for someone who is this exceptional, who goes above and beyond expectations every day, we want Fran to receive a broader recognition. Not only because she's 91 years old and deserves it, but because winning the Salute to Senior ServiceĀ® Contest means Fran will be an inspiration to others who may decide to contribute to making the world a better place by committing to volunteer services. Of course no one can catch up to Fran's legacy but we hope more people decide to give a shot.
