Ellen Neal deserves recognition as a volunteer because she is a compassionate, giving, and thoughtful individual. I have experienced firsthand her passion and kindness towards the senior community in South Surrey and White Rock. Ellen has been volunteering for these three organizations simply because she was asked by the Directors and Coordinators at the time. She has shown commitment and dedication to help plan and arrange the Kent Street Fresh & Lively community lunch for between 45-60 seniors for the past 18 years. This community lunch occurs three times a month and Ellen really enjoys putting smiles on the faces of the seniors through dancing, singing, and telling stories. This is where I met Ellen, two years ago, and she continues to consider these seniors a part of her family. Even though I am officially the lunch coordinator, Ellen has acted as a mentor because she has developed a bond filled with trust and love with the seniors in this community.

Ellen also volunteers for the White Rock Chamber Music for the past 13 years. She informed me that she got involved with the White Rock Chamber Music because when she was young, she was given help and guidance in music by other individuals. She wanted to give back to young people through music like she had once received.

Ellen has positively impacted the lives of many people in the South Surrey and White Rock community and will continue to do so in the future. Regarding the Fresh & Lively lunch, she said "I love this program. I plan to keep going until I'm 100. It makes my life full of joy." Ellen has received several recognition awards from Seniors Come Share Society for her many years of excellent service for our Kent Street Fresh & Lively Meal Program.

In conclusion, I would like to share a comment that Ellen has said to me recently: "I've often wondered who gains the most from volunteering - the volunteer or the one who needs the help from the volunteer? For me, I have had such fulfillment from volunteering that I know I get much more than I give. Thank you for the opportunity of being a volunteer."
