Archie volunteers two afternoons a week at IAH, an in-resident cancer hospice. Archie's wife died here and since her death he has wanted to give back to his community and support others who are going through the same difficulties he has experienced. At 88 years old Archie took our 7 week training program and during the training he was so open and honest and shared so many of his own personal stories that it encouraged others to open up. He helped to create a safe and trusting environment for the other participants. Each week he comes to IAH twice a week and supports the staff by doing whatever they need him to do. He answers the phone and doors, assists with administrative tasks, helps out in the kitchen providing tea and coffee and a supportive listening ear to family members and visitors of the hospice residents. He comes in with a smile on face and a positive attitude each week. Other volunteers and staff truly enjoy working with him.
Archie also donated his time and expertise by organizing our architectural information and expedited the acquisition of approved drawings and documents of the hospice. He used his professional expertise to ensure we have appropriate documents and digital drawings.
Archie is always willing to help out, offers to pick up extra shifts when he can and offers to assist with events.
Archie is a huge support to staff and brings great comfort to residents and visitors in his role at IAH.
At 88 years old he keeps himself busy and volunteers his time in various other ways in the community. Archie drives two ladies in their 90's weekly to a local seniors day program, is a board member of his church and a member of the Civil Engineering Society.
What makes Archie so special is his wonderful attitude. Not only is he gracious, warm and helpful but he is always eager to explore new ideas and share his thoughts. With his particular blend of humor and consideration he has the wonderful ability to lift the spirit! It is a delight to work with him.
